Hi Folks!
There was a single White Winged Black Tern at Penrhyn estuary this p.m.
(among 34 Common Terns). Phil Straw came down and managed to get it before
it flew off. That makes 4 years in a row that 1 has turned up in December or
November. Noteable features:
a. much smaller
b. minimal webbing between toes
c. quite distinct white eye-rings
d. white hook over dark wing bar
e. much paler head
f. fine scalloped white edges to the feathers forming
the dark band down the back of the neck
g. very dark curved primaries
h. light underwings
Have a great and safe festive season. We’re moving house in 3 days – what a
Xmas present!
Graham Buchan
