Head and bill shape, colouration of head, eye-ring all look good for a
Sharp-tailed Sandpiper - however in a very stange posture. Was it injured?

Subject: odd looking wader
Dave Bullock and I observed an odd looking wader at Werribee Treatment Plant
last Thursday. Russell has kindly posted Dave's photo on the web site at
http://www.birding-aus.org Click RARE BIRDS and go to the link at the bottom
of the page. The bird was associating with sharp-tailed sandpipers, curlew
sandpipers and red-necked stints. It was taller than all of them, and certainly
broader in body, particularly around the neck. It had a chestnut streaked head
and its breast was very heavily streaked with black vertical lines to appear
almost completely black. When it flew its tail pattern appeared to be similar
to the sharp-tailed sandpipers. We cannot find anything in our field guides
that resemble the bird. We considered the possibility of a ruff in partial
breeding plumage. We would be grateful for any assistance.
