Hi,
After much personal effort I have finally completed the first version of a PDA
database for pelagics, using the Cybertracker software. Everything is
completely free to use. All you need is a PDA running PocketPC or Palm
operating systems, and an associated GPS (e.g. Bluetooth / inbuilt).
The database allows you to record lists of birds at sea as often as you like
and assign a latitude and longitude to every set of records - or to record more
precise positions for things of interest and various waypoints. It stores all
the information commonly used to create pelagic trip reports and can even be
used for relatively sophisticated effort-related methods. It is set up with
forms which can also be used for marine mammals. The database has built in
species lists for all marine mammals and seabirds of the world but you can
optionally list other species manually. The results are exported into Excel at
the end of a trip.
In the next few weeks my intention is to promote this with the Marine Wild Live
website for uploading and disseminating data and producing online reports.
There will be more on that in due course. For now, I welcome anyone who would
like to obtain a copy for use and field-testing to contact me. I am pretty
sure the system is bug free but there are bound to be some usability issues
that can be overcome with some constructive feedback.
