Thanks for posting the results Allan,
Like Greg's forthcoming 'Stalker-Talk', I'll be posting a wrap-up of the
Brewer's 2007 campaign soon(ish). It will be from the pen of Jacqueline Winter
of course.
But in brief, we had another incredible run this year, bettering the record set
last year, which was actually 233 (not 232). I think it's the 3rd year in a row
that the record has been beaten by two teams...one just beating it by a few
more than the other!
Once again, we scored quite a few more birds on the Saturday than the Sunday
(126 vs 112) but I think the main catalyst for our bigger total this year was
being at the Hunter Estuary / Ash Island right on the high tide (and it was a
big tide), as we saw every wader species that we could have reasonably
expected, with the exception of Red-necked Stint. We also "finished" our
scheduled route with 2.5 hours to spare, enabling us time to head back to
various sites and 'mop up' dipped birds.
Of interest, there were lots of Crimson Chats this year in the Gunnedah area,
including birds in small groups (4-7 birds) in Box Open Forest habitat. It
appears likely that they are going to breed there too.
Stay tuned for the Brewer's Banter.

There hasn't been a word about the NSW Twitchathon so I thought I would
post the results (see Frances's email).
Congratulations to the Brewers for another awesome result. 238!! What a
number and to think only a couple of years back the wining scores were
in the low 200's. Once again the Whacked-out Woodswallows were a close
second on 235 with the Menacing Monarch on 233. All these scores were
above the winning score last year of 232 but that is purely from
memory.
In the Champagne race, my team, Central Coasters (Rob Quinan, John
Reidy, Rob and Allan Benson) came second by the close but decisive
margin of three birds. We were more than happy with this effort and it
went smoothly, although the washed out culvert on Ash Island didn't
help
the cause. It's amazing what you don't see. We saw neither Nankeen
Kestrel nor Black Shouldered Kite but a lot of other much "rarer"
raptors.
Looking forward to the reports from the gun teams. It always makes
fascinating reading
Regards
Allan Benson

Dear Twitchathon supporters,
It is my pleasure to announce the winners of the 2007 Birds Australia
NSW & ACT Twitchathon - scores below. There are a couple of scores
still to come in and as soon as they are known I will update the
details. What "humungous" scores this year - I am so impressed - you
obviously all do a great deal of "sussing out" before the day!
Congratulations to every team for such a fantastic turnout and for
giving up your spare time to join in this fun event. Birds Australia
appreciates your considerable contribution to raising awareness about
birds and their conservation in the various ways you have all done. My
thanks go to all of you for your hard work and for turning a
pleasurable
exercise into a fundraising public awareness campaign too. Well done!
A few things to report. Please send in your score sheets to Alan
Morris, at Birds Australia, P.O. Box 1322, Crows Nest 1585. We need
them to assess which team saw the rarest bird and to check how many
kms.
each team drove. Please also send in your sponsorships as soon as you
have gathered them all in to the same P.O. Box. It would be great to
get all the sponsorships in before Christmas so Alan can escape the
paperwork after Christmas. Would any team which sent an unsigned
registration form by fax, please arrange for the signatures on the form
and send in to the above address as soon as possible. As I only have
certain email addresses, would anyone knowing of a team involvement
where no email contact was documented, could you please pass on the
details to that team.
Would club publicity officers please extract details from this email
for
publication in your newsletters.
I would personally like to thank David Geering for dealing with the
publicity on the ABC for Birds Australia's Twitchathon. I was so
relieved he was available as this definitely is not my forte in life!
I also thank Alan Morris who did a great job getting the kit prepared
and out to so many teams. It is a time consuming task and I speak from
personal experience!
As I am leaving for Moree tomorrow morning, I will not be able to
update
the scores to you until Monday 5 November or thereabouts. Sorry about
that but the list is a fair indicator of who won. As Alan has sorted
out all the prizes, I imagine I am to leave all this for him to attend
to upon his return from overseas but I will keep you posted.
