Thanks to those helpful people who responded. It appears that the suspected
Long-toed SP is just too big to be a stint, a rough comparison with adjacent
knots and tattlers places it somewhere above 17cm, thus a tiny (albeit mature)
Sharpie.
Part of my reasoning in the initial ID was a size comparison with the other
suspect bird (poss Pectoral SP) a few metres up the beach, which looked
significantly bigger - about 20-30% by my recollection - so if that was a
juvenile Sharpie it was right at the other end of the size range. By my
recollection bill length and curvature was greater than is clearly shown in any
of the photos (never got a full side profile) so I am still very suspicious.
Just when I was starting to enjoy waders too. I'm going heading back to the
bush.
