I've been in the country - er, for a while now (like, all my life), and
still can't immediately recognise place names and know where they are.

I use a location lookup feature that Geoscience Australia provides at
http://www.ga.gov.au/map/names/. I find it useful, and on occasions,
very useful.

If you put in South west Rocks, it gives you a choice of five official
positions (all pretty much the same in this case - a school, two
watercourses, a locality and a rock -believe it or not) and shows you
their latitude and longitude (which is great for survey forms) and gives
you a link to a (pretty rough) map.

Having moved to Australia from the US just recently I have had some
trouble with some locations posted on this list. I - and I guess others
as well - would appreciate to get more information from the subject
lines. E.g. "NSW, Sydney, Cumberland State Forest, 7 Emperor Penguins"
Not only for rarities such as the Lesser Yellowlegs, but also for all
the influx posts (e.g. Woodswallows) and other site-related posts. Not
only the country is huge (sometimes I don't even know if a post relates
to a location on the other side of the continent!), but even most of the
states (meaning even "NSW" sometimes is not enough to find the site!

Sydney/NSW????

Established protocols ask for a state in the subject line as well as the
location....... Would be nice to see though!!!!

Yes, a Lesser Yellowlegs has turned up at South West Rocks!

Ken Shingleton found it on Sunday, Oct 28th. Yesterday morning he took
out Keith Brandwood to see it, then I heard about it and went out with
him again in the afternoon. We were there from 3pm to 4pm and got good
looks at it through his scope from about 30-50m. It is in one of the
last swamps along Boyter's Lane, Pelican Island. We were able to see all
its defining features including its rump pattern, chest colouration,
bill size and shape, its eyebrow, and its long yellow legs. It was
accompanied by Sharpies and Marsh Sandpipers. It is clearly larger than
a Marshy. Ken expects an influx of "bird-tourists" as a result of this
find....
