Just have come back from a couple of days helping with Bush Stone-curlew survey
near Lake Victoria in SW NSW - no luck with this species, but some potential
habitat was found. Other birds of note were:
A single 1st year Black-breasted Buzzard flying over the Murray River near Lock
7. The second one I have seen in a month, and got good views and direct
comparison with a Whistling Kite that was pursuing it. It was flying over Red
Gum country, and did travel over the Victorian bank (not certain if this counts
as a state record from the NSW side) which I am guessing is probably Neds
Corner reserve.
Sacred Kingfishers were common and calling yesterday 8th October though
possibly arrived earlier
A single Western Gerygone was calling in Lake Victoria SF, which is the first I
have heard in this part of the world, and looking at Atlas data is probably
slightly to west of normal range
100s of Black-tailed Native-hens, a few Glossy Ibis and a single Greenshank on
Frenchmans Creek just east of Lake Victoria.
No Regent Parrots were heard, but they should be in the area.
Cheers,
Peter
