Subject: [Birding-Aus] Field guides on CD or DVD

Hi Everyone,

A request from a friend for advice about European/African seabird field
guides has brought me to a question which has interested me for some
time now. Harrison's Seabirds of the World is a bit heavy to lug around
on planes, at 1.3kg.

Apart from the long-available Simpson & Day field guide for Australian
birds, is there any movement in the world to make field guides available
on CD or DVD? I haven't seen anything yet. I travel quite a bit, and
always have my computer with me. I would especially appreciate not
having to cart a pile of heavy bird books around the world or Australia,
but have them on my computer. I have even resorted to scanning key pages
of specialist guides. I know why many people wouldn't want one, but for
those of us who would want it, I wonder if there is a market waiting for
a provider. I have so often wished I had my HANZABs with me as I travel,
but I guess after so much outlay on the hard copies, I would baulk at
paying again. They would surely be so much cheaper to produce as an
add-on to publication.

But I am still interested to know if anything is happening on that front.

Cheers,

Jill
