Folks,
Having seen numerous references by Edwin Vella, David Mitford et al of the
seemingly mythical white morph Southern Giant–Petrel, Ray Gobbe and I
finally saw one at Mistral Point. It flew to within 75m of us – what a
stunning seabird. There was little else though.
This morning Ray and I went to look through the terns at La Perouse. We were
very pleased with the sight of 19 Whiskered Terns, 11 Common Terns, 2
White-Fronted Terns (1 with beautiful long streamers) and lots of Crested
Terns – great for comparison. With the Kowa 883 I was able to look very
closely at the Whiskered Terns – I had not appreciated until today that
their toes have much less webbing than the Sternus terns – each toe stands
out. In addition the toenails are black, contrasting nicely with the bright
red legs and toes.
Penrhyn Estuary remains disappointing with on/off sightings of Curlew Sand,
Pacific GP, Pied Oystercatcher and Sharpies. Even the RN Stints are not
certainties.
Cheers,
Graham Buchan
