Here in the Blue Mountains, Shining Bronze-Cuckoos occasionally overwinter, but this year I saw my first for the season on 2nd August at Weir Reserve, Penrith. One member of the group I was leading photographed this stunning bird getting a caterpillar from the bark of a tree, which I have put on my website at http://www.bmbirding.com.au/news.html. The same day we saw numerous Olive-backed Orioles.

Regarding Belinda's comment: "I have a feeling the local rufous whistler will have an impostor in his nest." The Shining Bronze nearly always parasitises domed nests such as thornbills and fairy-wrens so I suspect your Rufous Whistler will be safe, at least from this species. Does anyone have records of them parasitising cup-shaped nests?

Cheers,

Carol
