Hi Laurie

Wish I knew!!! I am not knowledgeable on over-wintering of species that are
generally migratory. I am sure others on this forum will be happy to
commence another lengthy thread on the subject!

G'day Bob,

How can you tell the difference between an early arrival and an
over-wintering bird? I've read about some species [eg Curlew Sands]
where the males have a quick turn-around [they bugger off as soon as
they've finished mating], but there are species where part of the
population over-winters in the south.

Speaking heretically, there is evidence that climate change is
affecting intra-continental migrants - ( eg

index.php?set_id=1&click_id=143&art_id=nw20070817133039214C687097
Climate change ruffles winter birds August 17 2007 at 02:34PM ).
Perhaps there will come a time when a sub-group of the
cross-hemispherical migrants will decide to stay put in the southern
hemisphere and start breeding here as well.

Regards, Laurie.
