Central Australian Trip Report. June 2007 (Part 2)

26km E of Lyndhurst SA. New for Martin and Garry.

14^th June          Budgerigars, Banded Whiteface, Pied Honeyeaters, Crimson Chat, Chirruping Wedgebill, White-browed & Masked Woodswallows, Zebra Finch, Rufous & Brown Songlarks all abundant Strzelecki Crossing SA.

                        Black-eared Cuckoo (single) Strzelecki Crossing SA. Would have been new for Garry, but was only seen buy Martin.

                        Black-breasted Buzzard (1 x pair) Merty Merty SA.

                        Flock Bronzewing (50-60 birds) 35km W of Tibooburra NSW. New for Martin and Garry.

                        Flock Bronzewing (200+ birds) 27km W of Tibooburra NSW.

14+15^th June    Cockatiel, Diamond Dove & Zebra Finch abundant throughout Tibooburra area NSW.

15^th June          Flock Bronzewing (22 birds) 15 km N of Mt. Wood NSW.

                        Black Falcon (4 birds) N & NW of Mt. Wood NSW.

                        Bourke?s Parrot (3 birds) 35km N of Warri Gate Q. New for Garry.

                        Flock Bronzewing (9 birds) 38km N of Warri Gate Q.

16 June            Chestnut-breasted Quail-thrush (4 birds) 20km E of Eulo Q. New for Garry.

                        Bourke?s Parrot (several groups) 15km E & 35km NW of Eulo Q.

                        White-browed Treecreeper (3 birds) & Chestnut-breasted Quail-thrush (1 x pair) 35kn NW of Eulo Q.

17^th June          Chestnut-breasted Quail-thrush (single) 12km N of Idalia NP camp area Q.

                        Hall?s Babbler (9 birds) 5km N of Idalia NP camp area Q. New for Garry.

18^th June          Black Falcon, Crimson & Orange Chat, Gibberbird, Zebra Finch all numerous in Diamantina NP and Coorabulka areas.

19^th June          Pictorella Mannikin (50-60birds) Cuttaburra Crossing of Eyre Creek Q. This record is well to the south of any known previous.

                        Cattle Egret (5 birds) Cuttaburra Crossing Q. Outside normal range.

Black Falcon, Diamond Dove, Budgerigar, Crimson & Orange Chats, Zebra Finch all in good numbers at Cuttaburra Crossing Q.

Straw-necked Ibis (unknown number, probably 1,000,000 birds) Bedourie Q and 20km to the N. No other individuals of this species seen on the whole trip.

Painted Finch & Spinifex Pigeon (several groups) Sybella Creek and Warrigal Waterhole Q.

20^th June          Kalkadoon Grasswren (2-3 birds) Sybella Creek and Warrigal Waterhole Q. New for Garry.

                        Carpentarian Grasswren (3-5 birds) Mc Namara Rd site Q. New for Martin and Garry.

                        Grey-fronted Honeyeater abundant throughout Mt. Isa ? Camooweal areas Q.

21^st June           Flock Bronzewing (15-20 birds) #6 Hinkler Bore, 75km N of Barkly Homestead NT.

                        Flock Bronzewing (12 birds) 85 km N of Barkly Homestead NT.

                        Red-chested Button-quail (1 bird) 55km N of Barkly Homestead NT. New for Garry.

                        Grey-fronted & Black-chinned Honeyeaters (numerous) 55km N of Barkly Homestead NT.

                        Little Button-quail (5 birds) 35km N of Barkly Homestead NT.

                        Crimson Chat, Budgerigar, White-browed & Masked Woodswallows, Zebra Finch, Rufous Songlark all especially numerous between Barkly Homestead and Tenant Creek NT.

22nd June         Slaty-backed Thornbill (several groups) Kunoth Well area NT.

22+23^rd June    Budgerigar, Diamond Dove, Painted Finch, Zebra Finch, Rufous Songlark all very numerous in N?Dhala Gorge NT.

                        Dusky Grasswrens (2 x groups) N?Dhala Gorge NT.

24^th June          Gibberbird (single) Maryvale Rd, next to Alice Springs airport NT. Outside normal range.

24+25^th June    Cinnamon Quail-thrush (4 groups) between 10-30km W of Maryvale Station NT.

 

To say the least we had a sensational trip! Most noteworthy were the Pictorella?s 370km out of range and the high numbers of Flock Bronzewings within NSW. Wonderfully lush conditions no doubt contributed to these particular records.

 

Many thanks to Rob Benson from NSW Central Coast for the tip-off for the Chestnut-breasted Whiteface site.

 

Target species not seen were few. These are listed below.

-         Letter-winged Kite       (would have been new for both of us)

-         Grey Falcon                 (would have been new for Garry)

Barbary Dove               (would have been new for both of us. Is this bird still around or have all been recently exterminated?)

-         Blue-winged Parrot       (would have been new for Garry)

-         Grey Grasswren           (would have been new for Garry)

-         Grey Honeyeater          (would have been new for both of us)

-         Yellow Chat                 (would have been new for both of us)

-         Night Parrot                 (would, of course, have been new for both of us)

 

Has anyone recorded LW Kites or Yellow Chats in any of these areas during these times? They must have been somewhere ? we would very much appreciate any news of records of these species.
