LEDs are much more efficient than normal bulbs, the white light ones appear to be quite blue. If you buy the bare LEDs the normal brightness measurement is millicandelas. The light has a strong peak in the blue with broader less intense peak in yellow-green light. They look quite dazzling as the light is normally tightly focused by the shape of the plastic that the LED parts are moulded into.

Larger ones are definitely available. Try a dive shop, though they could be pricey. Have a look at this link for one rated at 32 Lumens:

Don't know if they would be any better or worse than normal halogen type globes in spotlights as far as dazzling animals.
