Hi All,
I've just spent 3 days at Lamington National Park in south-east
Queensland staying at the Binna Burra Lodge. Despite drought
conditions and it being very cold even for sunny Qld the birding was
excellent. Although most time was spent hanging out with the family I
did manage to get a few good birding trips into the surrounding
rainforest.
I had good views of Rufous Scrub-bird along the Coomera Tk. Perhaps
surprisingly it was seen in a grassy area, not an area dominated by
Nothafagus moorei. It also responded well to pishing. Other birds
recorded included Albert's Lyrebird, Noisy Pitta, Regent Bowerbird,
Green Catbird, Pale-yellow Robin and Logrunner. Unfortunately most of
east-coast migrants were absent (or silent), such as the pigeons,
cuckoos and monarchs. Mammals included Red-throated and Red-legged
Pademelon and a Long-nosed Bandicoot. (See full list below.)
For the record Binna Burra's an excellent place to stay: large open
fires, views east and west, nice wines and easy access to the
rainforest. (The RSB was seen only and hour or so out of Binna Burra
for example.) The main benefit (for me) of staying at Binna Burra was
the well organised kid's activities (particularly good for my nine
year son) which freed up some time for birding. (Although not so good
for my one and a half year old son.) Activities included flying fox
rides, spotlighting, abseiling, rock climbing, and games such as bush
bingo.

managed to catch up with Star Finch at Karumba!
Also I've just heard that the Binna Burra section of Lamington
National Park has been closed today due to bush fires. Anyone know
about this?
