Dear Australia Birding -

Next month my partner Peggy and I are visiting Australia for the first time.
We will be in Brisbane, as I am attending a conference there. We have five
days for birding before the conference, and my partner will continue to bird
Brisbane while I am busy at work!

Unlike the other visitor who posted an RFI about Brisbane, our desired
species list is easy: Everything! When we look at the field guides (we
managed to acquire all three), your birds all look beautiful, even the ones
that are common to you. We both want to see at least one species of
Frogmouth, and an Owlet-Nightjar would be cool, too. But we'd really like
to have a list of people's favorite birding spots in and around the city,
either on the UQ campus, or accessible by the ferry system that stops there.
Also, good locations for shorebirds and sea-watching around town would be
great.

Currently we intend to spend two days in Brisbane, one in Lockyer Valley,
and two in Lamington. The conference will mean three more days in Brisbane,
and the likelihood there is that we will have some shared time together for
night birding.

Any assistance is welcome. I've been enjoying this list for the week I've
been on it, and I am also happy to help advise folks who are visiting
California. We live in the San Francisco Bay Area, in Half Moon Bay (where
we have a wintering gull flock that often tops 10,000 birds and ten
species). We also travel widely around the state. As to Arizona, every
American birder tries to get there as often as possible. There are two site
guide books - the one from the American Birding Association is easier to
follow, than the one published by Tucson Audubon Society, but they are both
good.  If anyone is interested, I know a great guide for hire down there;
email me privately so I don't violate any anti-commercial rules for this
list. The hummingbird show in Arizona in late summer is one of the most
thrilling birding sights in the US.

Good birding to you -

Jennifer Rycenga
