I returned to Brisbane on Monday after a week at Bowra (north of Cunnamulla
QLD) assisting Dean Portelli and Bob Inglis on Dean's Hall's Babbler
research. A great week despite the 5am and freezing morning starts and early
freezing evening finishes. Many highlights apart from the Babblers with
Black-breasted Buzzard and superb views of an Australian Owlet-nightjar in
the open early one evening (as opposed to the head out of a hole as is
usual). Burke's parrots were plentiful and seen both on the ground and in
low lying branches affording great views of underpart colouring.
Chestnut-breasted Quail Thrush, Southern Whiteface were seen every day and a
very obliging single Australian Pratincole allowed close range observation.
In all 135 species for the trio with 20 new birds for me.
Thanks to Tom Tarrant, Peter Crow, Alan McBride, David Stowe and Carl
Billingham for their tips and advice pre-trip - much appreciated.
Cheers
peter
