Hi Birders,
Carl Corden asked about the status of Masked Owls in the Berowra-Hornsby
area and this is what I have found out from the records of Birding NSW as
published in their Annual Reports. Masked Owls are raely recorded in Sydney
(=County of Cumberland), indeed this has always been the case as Hindwood &
McGill 1956 (The Birds of Sydney) only mentioned one record, that at Menai
in 1949, while E.S.Hoskin 1991 (Birds of Sydney), reports two breeding
records, at Lindfield 1906 and Warriewood 1974. Overall, Masked Owls in the
County of Cumberland are confined to the tall forests on Sydney's North
Shore, Lindfield to Berowra, and to the south in the tall wet forests of
Royal National Park. However they are moderately common to the north of
Sydney on the Central Coast.and to the north-west of Sydney, in the St
Albans, Colo & Colo Heights area of Hawkesbury Shire. Vagrants are reported
elsewhere.
Set out below are all published records that have appeared in the NSW Annual
Bird Reports, Debus & Rose1994 (Large Forest Owls of NSW Aust. Birds 48,
S40-64) and previously mentioned references, note that there are more
