A further update from my father on the regent parrot court case .
Cheers
Alastair
Hi Al - The last on Regent Parrots till after 17th July. Greg Rohde, the
Victorian Dept of Sustainability & Environment officer who has the
supervision of this matter, explained to me this morning that they had
problems with the correct charges. Regents are "vulnerable" but the offences
in the Act are only for Protected, Notable and Endangered so it had to be
the lowest of the 3 types - Protected - as Notable isn't the same as
Vulnerable. .
The companies, despite the Magistrate's suggestion that a guilty plea would
get reduced penalties and spare them undesirable publicity, are pleading not
guilty to all the charges.
DSE intends to push for maximum sentences and compensation for what an
Environment Impact Statement has said is almost certainly the loss of a
whole breeding colony of Regents. Greg said it's hard to quantify in dollar
terms what this means to the environment but they'll give it their best
shot.
They were hoping to get a prosecution up under the EBCA (Cth) but some other
. bureaucrat listed the Western Regent not the Eastern race so that now
looks unlikely to go ahead.
Have a good weekend
Cheers Dad
