While birding around the Gunning-Yass area, north of Canberra, on Saturday
(2/6) I recorded a single Chestnut-rumped Thornbill in a mixed species
flock of thornbills and whitefaces. The location was at a property called
'Crown Castle' along Lade Vale Rd, SW of Gunning. The vegetation consisted
of Acacia (dominant), Casuarina and lots of fallen dead timber around rocky
outcrops with plenty of open bare/grassy patches of ground.
To my knowledge this is the first record for the Canberra region since
February 1961, when 4 birds were seen in Canberra for several days, and is
well beyond the eastern limit of distribution for this species.
This site had an abundance of small insectivores, many ground-foraging,
including 7 species of thornbill - Chestnut-rumped, Yellow-rumped, Yellow,
Striated, Brown, Buff-rumped and Weebill - and Southern Whiteface, Speckled
Warbler, Superb Fairy-wren and Flame Robin. Unfortunately a nice patch of
grassy box woodland across the road had 'For Sale' signs up and there were
obvious signs of clearing with most of the fallen timber bulldozed into
large piles.
