Grant, Sorry, I have to ask for clarification. Do you mean: "It was quite an unusual site"? That is what you wrote (spelling fixed). This might refer to something odd about the habitat. Or do you mean: "It was quite an unusual sight"? Which I suspect is what you meant, because it follows the context, in terms of suggesting that it is something rarely seen. (Or it may be a pun.)
