Guess you meant 24/8/06 - not 07! Anyhow the peak number of records here in
Bayside are April for the first half of the calendar year and August for the
second half. Most sightings are from our foreshore where I have no records
of birds remaining during the winter.
So your records are quite consistent with the birds being on the move. But
I'm not sure if they deliberately "gather" - congregations might be
something to do with weather...
Incidentally there has been a considerable drop in the number of groups of 4
or more birds in the last 10 years and there have been no Bayside sightings
in June or July since 2002.
