"Bird brain" is used colloquially to refer to a frivolous or scatter-brained
person. "Unfair to birds!" I say. There must surely be many b-aus
observations of birds demonstrating noteworthy intelligence?
In a recent email, a friend of mine has written:
We went into Sydney today to work on a project we will have at the Art
Gallery of New South Wales in late November. We were sitting outside
the coffee shop when two rainbow lorikeets flew next to the tables and
when nothing materialised, as there were few of us and we didn't have
food, they went to the edge of the building where the services were set
up and helped themselves very neatly and carefully to a paper packet of
sugar. And not the Equal, I noted:
They pulled out two Equals about an inch, but left them in the cup
and went for the real sugar. Then they flew next to us and opened
it and carefully snacked. And then flew off. They were elegant, as if
they knew they were at a museum and had to be on their best behaviour. They
were not trailer park trash or pushy like they can be!
Cheers
Syd

Thank you, Hollis. What a delightful story. And people speak
slightingly of "bird brains"! May I pass the story on to birding-aus,
please?
A couple of days to go, and you're off to Europe, Jon. (If I've got
it right.) Have a great time, and come back safely.
