Hi Gavin and all,
I was at the Western Treatment Plant today and checked out the odd
coloured Double-banded Plover at the T-section lagoons. The bird is
indeed a DBP and has patches of white on wings and back with yellow
patches on the face. I was more interested in the black flag that was
said to be on the left leg. I had good views through the scope and it
looked to me to be an abnormal growth of some sort protruding from the
side left knee. The growth was very dark in colour with greyish patches.
The opposite side of the knee was the same colour as the rest of the
leg. It was the general shape and size of a flag and I can understand
how it can be mistaken for one. Despite being right on the joint the
bird the bird's movement appeared normal. The bird flew as I reached for
the camera and I was unable to relocate it.
Also at the T-section was a Curlew Sandpiper very close to full breeding
plumage.

Subject: Help with Wader identification
Can anyone help with a wader identification seen at the Western
Treatment
Plant, Werribee today. The bird is the same size and outline as the
Double
Banded Plovers it was feeding with. It had a black or very dark leg
flag on
its left leg. The bird is light brown and white but stands out as
whiter
than other birds. It has 6-8 white spots on its folded wings each
approx
5-8 mm. White head with brown streaks and dark bill and legs. I assume
it's probably an aberrant Double Banded Plover but the dark leg flag
(Japan?) may indicate something else.
Thanks
Gavin Jackson
