Hi Greg,

The Panasonic LX-2 has quite a short lens (at 4 x optical zoom - equivalent
to about 112mm on a 35mm SLR, according to the Panasonic specs).
Additionally the camera takes photos with a wide aspect ratio - clearly
designed for landscape photography. I do a lot of bird photography using a
Nikon D200 SLR with a 400mm lens - and I must say that I find that lens a
little short in many situations. From what I've read, the Leica cameras have
almost identical specs to the Panasonics - at a Leica price - in other words
much more expensive. I must also say that the one magazine review that I've
read on the Panasonic LX-2 (Photo Review magazine) was not that flattering.

A friend of mine shoots with a Panasonic DMC-FZ50 - he takes bird photos too
- and he finds that camera excellent. I think that if you are after an
alternative to a digital SLR, with a reasonable length lens then this camera
is a good choice - it has a 12 x optical zoom - equivalent to about 420mm on
a 35mm SLR according to Panasonic.

I have read reviews of the Olympus SP550 UZ and it appears to be an
excellent camera. I was recently in Hong Kong (not long after the camera had
been released) and every shop I went into had sold out - I had intended to
purchase one for a friend of mine. At 18 x optical zoom (about 500mm
equivalent) it's a pretty good length for birds.

Most of the non-SLR digital cameras suffer to one degree or another either
with shooting in low light conditions, or when using higher ISO ratings -
the images tend to be noisy. The Olympus and the Panasonics are no
exception.

If you're interested, I found reviews of the Panasonics and the Olympus
here:

All the best,

Paul Dodd

Gooday birders

Does anyone know much about the Panasonic LX-2 or its Leica D-LUX 3
copy. Are they any good for bird stuff or just for general photography.
Any personal experiences would be appreciated.

Hi Kev,

Another camera to look into is the new Olympus SP550 UZ - with an
optical
zoom of 18x that gives 28-504mm range, macro to 1cm, image
stabilisation,
7.1 megapixel raw files (or jpeg if you choose) it actually presents as
a
serious alternative to getting an SLR camera. Big downsides are those
shared by all other compact digitals - inability to improve your range
without huge loss of quality, and inability to manually focus on
difficult
subjects. The only downside I can see specific to this camera is that
you
have to use the Olympus brand memory card (xD). Worth checking out, on
the
internet it can be found for between $600 and $800.

For the record, I have no commercial ties to Olympus (I use Nikon stuff)
-
I've just been looking at this camera as an alternative travel camera to
lugging around my SLR for work.

Regards,
Chris
