Folks,

I checked this with Russell and have his OK to post notice of the event to the list. Thanks Russell.

As some of you might know, I work at the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment, and I also serve as Secretary on the Board of the Mornington Peninsula and Western Port Biosphere Reserve Foundation, an organisation created in late 2003 to implement the vision for the Biosphere Reserve which was designated by UNESCO in November 2002. Through its Port Phillip Region, DSE has combined with the Biosphere Reserve Foundation to put on a Hypothetical, along the lines of the events run by Geoffrey Robertson QC that many of you might have seen on TV. The event will be held at Pakenham, on the south-eastern fringe of greater Melbourne, on Friday 1 June. There is a charge for admission, but the intention is to break even if possible - the event is not designed to run at a profit. It is intended to serve as a stakeholder engagement exercise for both organisations, and to boost awareness and membership of the Biosphere Reserve Foundation.

The topic of the Hypothetical is Western Port in the year 2025, 50 years after the release of the landmark Shapiro report on the Western Port Bay Environmental Study. The event will be moderated by Biosphere Chairman, well-known television weather presenter and sustainability advocate Rob Gell, with a panel including among other Prof. John Swan, Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the original Shapiro study, Casey City Councillor Lorraine Wreford and local Landcare and environmental campaigner Julie Weatherhead. All the details are contained in the registration brochure, which may be downloaded from the DSE and Biosphere Reserve Foundation websites (www.dse.vic.gov.au, then "What's New", or www.biosphere.org.au), except that an addition to the advertised panel since the brochure was finalised is Dr Xenia Dennett, convenor of BOCA's long-running Western Port bird survey. Please feel free to contact me by email at or by mobile on 0412 034 519 if you have any queries or you'd like any more information.

Regards,

  Jack Krohn
