Thanks for raising this important habitat loss issue for the list Deb. I
too have noticed this 'tidying up' your refer to in northern Victoria and
elsewhere...

As it is part of my work to publish these findings for the (Victorian)
Flora and Fauna Guarantee (FFG) Act Scientific Advisory Committee, I would
like to advise of the following information.

1. 'Loss of coarse woody debris' and Loss of hollow-bearing trees'
These two items are already listed as a threatening processes under the
FFG Act in Victoria. This means that an FFG Action Statement (or
management plan) must be compiled to address each process in Victoria.

2. Take of firewood as a threat to fauna
The issue referred to by Deb is the publication this week of a
recommendation NOT to list a nomination on the following item:

'Disruption to normal ecosystem processes and threats to native flora and
fauna due to removal of wood from Victorian native forests and woodlands
for firewood’

The Scientific Advisory Committee has assessed this new nomination (and
this week published its recommendation on the item) but decided that it
was already covered by the existing processes listed under the Act
(above). The Committee's reasoning is detailed in its recommendation
report (no. 768).

For those people interested in obtaining a copy of the Committee's
recommendation to the Minister, feel free to contact me directly.

cheers, Martin
