This morning (5/5/07), I enjoyed a good hour or so birding at Prospect
Reservoir (approx. 40 km from Sydney CBD).
Birds present around the picnic area (especially at George Maunder Lookout)
included 100 Great-crested Grebes (numbers are building up again for the
winter), a Darter, a Great Egret, at least 75 Australian Pelican, 1-2 Brown
Goshawks, a Whistling Kite, 2 White-bellied Sea-eagles (both an adult and a
juv. bird), a Black-shouldered Kite, Brown Quail, 4, 000 plus Coot, a
Whiskered Tern with 400 Silver Gulls, Peaceful Doves, Fan-tailed Cuckoo,
Grey-shrike Thrush, hundreds of Yellow-faced Honeyeaters migrating through
(with flocks of up to 50 or so at a time), Eastern Spinebill,
Mistletoebirds, both Spotted and Striated Pardalotes, an Olive-backed Oriole
and 15 Dusky Woodswallows (most of the Woodswallows were seen perched
together on an antennae at George Maunder Lookout and seen catching various
insects).
