Sorry, in my earlier posting, I got multiplications and divides mixed up - it should have read -"To work this out, divide the exit lens by the magnification and square it e.g. with 7x42s divide 42 by 7 which gives 6, then square it which makes 36. 10x40s gives a light value of 16 - moderate light; 16x50 gives a light value of 9.75 (not 9) - difficult in dark situations.
