Following up on the link, I noticed that the same issue of the Herald Sun carried a report on the innumerable bird deaths at Esperance, WA.
The birds tested had apparently died of lead poisoning.
Lead carbonate (in what form?) is apparently shipped through the port of Esperance. Import or export? Sorry I don't know how to do links but you can find it from the New Snake Species report..
