Have just heard from Andrew Stafford re the Javan Pond Heron.
He and Niven McCrie saw the bird with about five minutes to go before sunset
today (i.e. around 5 to 7 Darwin time)
It had not been seen before that since early Thursday morning.
The patch of habitat it has been seen in (see Dion Hobcroft’s posting) had
been steadily drying out in the tropical sun. There was a big monsoonal
downpour this afternoon which refilled things to a degree, perhaps bringing
the bird back in.
Apparently the bird is quite flighty and the area it has been using has been
churned up by four wheel drives, as it is an access point to the beach.
Hopefully it will hang around a bit longer but it appears that it is not as
easy to see as it has been. As I am bound to the desk until at least Monday,
I hope there is a bit more rain to keep the bird there, but who knows?
