Some people put in a second set of answers and scored better
second time round, but I reported on first entries.
Sorry, I
made a goof (and have rightly been corrected), in writing "it is curious that
nobody got 24 correct" (about Storks excreting onto their legs). In fact
two replies got that correct. I somehow missed one entry altogether on my score
sheet and wrongly crossed it off on another. Also I have received this message
from Greg Clancy who
is studying these birds: "I
did note your comments regarding storks excreting onto their legs and I can
confirm that Black-necked Storks on the NSW North Coast do in fact do this but
it is not a common activity. It is almost certainly done to cool down and
Black-necked Storks also excrete over their nests, eggs and nestlings,
apparently for the same reason. The behaviour of excreting onto legs,
called 'chalking', has been commonly recorded in non-breeding White Storks in
Africa."
