The year before last I sat for an hour by a waterhole, at dusk, north of
Boulia, in hope of a night parrot. I then went driving north-west of
Boulia. No birds, but a min min light and the most extraordinary,
magnetic, clear skies, complete with an asteroid and its fiery tale. It
was a truly beautiful night lifted from the pages of an impressive
poetry volume.
I reckon night parrots are probably more numerous than people believe.
The vastness of their potential habitat and the fact that so few birdos
are out in this habitat searching for them (either because many of the
parrots' locales are too hard to reach or people believe they'll never
see one, so don't bother looking), means that ascertaining just how many
individuals are out there is close to impossible.
How many birding-aus members have been out searching for night parrots?
Very few I'd think.
