Dear Carl and Members,
On the thread of "the number of birders in Australia", this has been a topic
of interest to me for a long time because I keep seeing more and more new
publications popping up in the local bookshop and now even on the counter of
AusPost post offices!!
Each time I go to my local library, I scan the appropriate shelves for bird
books (because I'm curious), and there are plenty of old, middle aged, and
new bird related books. So I guess there are a lot of people who read them
or they would not be on the list of topics that the library administrators
deem worth holding?
I wonder if any academic people on this list can recall seeing any research
work that contains birder related statistics as part of the justification
etc for their work.
Perhaps some government department members could point us to some of their
birder statistics produced as part of their ecological or political
activities.
And then there is the tourism industry. Surely there are some birding
related statistics out there somewhere, otherwise I wonder how the many bird
related tourist guide businesses can front up to their bank every so often
with documentation for appropriate "support"?
So, in order to get some real meaty birding related figures for this group,
I'm happy to gather info offline, and produce a summary for general
consumption!
In the mean time I'll try to get bird book loan statistics from my library!
Myles.
