PhD Scholarship: Influence of Spatial Pattern & Condition of Native
Vegetation on Birds Assemblages on Cotton Farms in Southern Queensland
Uni of Qld, CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems & Cotton Catchment Communities CRC
-----

PROJECT AIMS: The University of Queensland, CSIRO Sustainable
Ecosystems and Cotton Catchment Communities CRC, have established a
research program on the influence of spatial pattern of landscape
elements and the type and condition of non-crop habitats, to selected
ecosystem services at farm and sub-catchment scales. We are
especially interested in the efficiency and efficacy of natural enemy
control of cotton pests, the provision of habitat for vertebrates
that may contribute to biocontrol, and the maintenance of natural
ecological processes in vegetation remnants. The aim of these
projects is to develop scientifically based principles for managing
native vegetation for multiple benefits in intensively farmed cotton
landscapes.

The PhD project will undertake research on the spatial ecology of
birds on cotton farms. The student will use ground-based sampling and
spatial and statistical modelling to determine the influence of
spatial arrangement and condition of native vegetation on bird
assemblages in a cotton growing region of southern Queensland.

REQUIREMENTS: Enthusiastic and motivated student with a background in
bird ecology, landscape ecology, spatial modelling or floodplain
river ecology, First Class or 2A Honours (or equivalent) degree in a
related field. The successful candidate must enjoy team work and
remote field-based research, must be an Australian citizen and hold
an Australian driver's licence.

REMUNERATION: Stipend: $26,000pa (tax free) plus operating costs for
3 years maximum.

FURTHER INFORMATION: Dr. Yvonne Buckley (email:
or phone: 07-3365-7085) or Dr Alan House (email:
or phone 07-3214-2365).

Applicants should submit a letter (maximum two pages) outlining their
suitability for the position, accompanied by a brief CV (including
contact details for two referees) and a copy of their academic
transcripts, to: Dr Yvonne Buckley, The Ecology Centre, School of
Integrative Biology, University of Queensland, St Lucia Queensland
4072.
Closing date: 2 March, 2007.
