Hi all,

I apologise for the slight delay in reporting this but I felt I needed confirmation before encouraging people to try for a bird which, in this case, they are more likely to dip out on than actually see.

A little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus) has been seen several times in the past few days around the 'lagoon' at the northern end of the Pebble Beach Common in Sandstone Point near Bribie Island, SE Queensland.
The UBD Brisbane Refidex reference is:
On Bestmann Road East opposite Peerless Way, Brisbane Map 52 G19.
This is a public area with a gazebo-type structure and is next to the small shopping village containing an IGA store.

The reason I say that most people are likely to 'dip' on this one is that the lagoon is filled mainly with very large Lotus Lily plants, the large white pink/variety.
The edges of the lagoon have clumps of reeds.
From personal experience I can say that spotting the Bittern is a very hit and
miss affair.
It is only likely to be seen if it is flying from one spot on the lagoon to another. If it decides not to fly it is impossible to see.
However, if you don't try you definitely will not see it.

Anyone trying for the Bittern should also take a walk through the 'common' along Peerless Way and look for the several Buff-banded Rails which are living there at the moment. On Sunday 4th Feb, Paul Walbridge and I glimpsed a 'crake' of some sort in that area. We decided it wasn't a Buff-banded Rail but couldn't decide on a positive identification.
There is also a flying fox colony next to the lagoon.
And a nest pole for the local Osprey. The osprey may or may not be in residence.
I would suggest parking in public parking area between the lagoon and the
shopping village.

Cheers

Bob Inglis
