What a brilliant solution! Indeed Maremmas are livestock protection dogs.
And trained well do their job very well too. The Europeans have other breeds
that do the same the job. In saying that the Maremmas and their counterparts
are not for the fainthearted dog person. Discipline is a must as is 'special
training. ( I just happen to know a couple of them!) Even your humble
German Shepherd could be trained for the job - In Europe - protection of
livestock was in their job descriptions originally. (Ours used to 'protect'
the guinea pigs) Maybe there should be a programme set up to protect other
sea birds, especially from the morons who like to hurt and kill ground
nesting birds. I wouldn't like to tackle a cranky Maremma. One should always
respect a Maremma!!
