Hi All, Whilst there is this debate about use of calls to attract or annoy or disturb birds, I thought I'd send this little aside, about use of bird calls to influence people, except they got the wrong one. See my message to WIRES and their reply (below). The TV ad I refer to appears on TV in Canberra and maybe only here and NSW (I don't know). They plead difficulty in obtaining Australian bird calls. Is it really that hard? Why are we constantly bombarded with this sound effect of the American Red-tailed Hawk, such that I (who have never been out of Australia) can recognise it so often? Dare I say in their wish to use the Whistling Kite they could perhaps have got it off wherever the Rabbit Proof Fence film took it from, where it is plonked into the film, along with visuals (and storyline) about the Black Kite.
