My son and I watched a superb fairy-wren feeding a juvenile cuckoo larger than itself on the morning of Jan 1. I couldn't find good pictures of juvenile cuckoos on the web, but think it is a Horsfields: It has a dark line through the eye, like the adult, and a paler line running down from the bill. My other son and I observed it this morning - he stalked to within less than 2M of it for a good view. It has a dark line running straight down the back, and reddish trim on either side of the tail. It also had a scalloped pattern on the wings when seen from behind. There was no obvious barring yet on the chest. So was it a Horsfields?
