Last Monday (12/12) I took some visitors to Birds Australia Gluepot Reserve
for birding and took the opportunity to check out the fire damage.
The Reserve appears to have escaped most of the fires that destroyed 115,000
ha of mallee country, mainly to the south and east. However, about 10,000 ha
is lost at Gluepot, primarily in the Birdseye block (the off-limits eastern
part of the reserve). Some good Red-lored Whistler sites around the
boundaries of Birdseye have gone. People familiar with the reserve would
know the 'Malleefowl' walk (also called 'Triodia' walk), at the end of which
was a fairly reliable Red-lored Whistler site. This is no more.
On a brighter note I managed to find large (>20) flocks of Miners including
many Black-eareds (I wonder if small groups of birds displaced by the fires
joined forces), as well as all the other 'usual' stuff: White-browed
Treecreeper, Southern Scrubrobin, Shy Heathwren, Striated Grasswren, Striped
Honeyeater, and 'crippling' views of a Black-eared Cuckoo.
On the way back at the Waikerie ferry, some White-breasted Woodswallows - a
rather unusual sighting this far south.
