Hi Birders,
During the past week Central Coast birders have seen some great birds and
the the rains of the past few days should continue to keep things hopping
along.
On 25/11/06 Ben Pointer and others saw two seperate pairs of White-throated
Nightjars on eggs on dry ridges in the Upper Mangrove Creek area while Peter
Settle saw a pair of Square-tailed Kites over a timbered ridge at Wyoming.
This is the first time that a pair of birds have been seen together on the
Central Coast. The first record for a SQTK on the Central Coast was only in
2002 but since then there have been regular sightings at Wyoming, Mardi and
Palmgrove. A Bush Stone-curlew with chick was seen at Davistown. There was
an Opsrey at Budgewoi lake (Noel Lonergan) & White-throated Needletails at
Chittaway Point (John & Carole Carpenter) and Norah Head (Robyn & Dick
Price).
On 26/11 a Grey Goshawk at Mangrove Mountain (M.Pointer).
On 28/11, 1 Marsh Sandpiper with 435+ Sharp-tailed Sandpipers, 4 Curlew
Sandpipers & 121 Red-necked Stints, 1152 Black Swan, 44 Little Tern & 45
Whiskered Tern on the Budgewoi Lake Sandmass.
At North Entrance there were 8 Greenshanks with a nesting pair of Little
Terns & 45 non-breeding plumage Little Terns
At Tuggerah STW 9 Hoary-headed Grebes (Kaye & Margaret Pointer)
On 30/11/06 Still 6 Pinkears and 4 Shovelers at Tuggerah STW, a pair of Grey
Teal with 3 ducklings (unusual breeding record) and a Little Eagle.
On 1/12/06 there was 1 White-winged Black Tern with 16 Whiskered Terns at
Chittaway Point along with 2 Red Knots, 4 Curlew Sandpipers and many
Sharp-tailed Sandpipers.
On 2/12/06 during the regular outing of the Birding NSW Central Coast Group
2 Great Knots along with 2 Greenshanks, and a Buff-banded Rail at Picnic
Point.
On 4/12, nesting Striated Herons at Long Jetty
