Hi Gordon, I heard a Koel at Emu Plains (even further to the west of Sydney than you are) on 15th September this year, and they have been calling around Penrith since the beginning of October, although probably not as many as in past years. I saw two Cattle Egrets here in breeding plumage last week and they have been trickling through here for the past few weeks. As Alan says probably on their way north to the breeding grounds. CB Cuckoos are now here in reasonable numbers, I have seen several over our house here in the suburbs this week.
