Shirley Cameron's message reminded me I was there very briefly on Saturday
evening (in my suit after a long day's work in Melbourne). Couldn't find
the summer plumaged phalarope on Walsh's Lagoon, or any other for that
matter. I only had bins, and stopped at Paradise Rd and Walsh's. It was
very windy and I didn't blame the phalarope for being somewhere else!

I was hoping for Lewin's Rail along the Little River - didn't see any
crakes or rails - but I did see a couple of Black-tailed Native Hens near
the ford. I've never seen them here before. There was an
unusually-coloured sandpiper at Paradise Rd - most likely a Sharp-tailed
losing its summer plumage. It had a buff breast - much the same colour as
the sandpiper that goes by that name, but only on the top half of the
breast. The cap and bill looked right for Sharp-tailed. No scope, no
camera, and not much time, so it was fairly pointless trying to figure out
what it really was. How quickly do waders lose their summer plumage? I
haven't been able to find that out. Does it take days or weeks? Will
this bird look like a normal Sharpie by next weekend, or does it take
longer than that?

Other sighting of note was a group of Banded Lapwing, in their usual spot
- the paddock beside the crossroads, diagonally opposite Avalon airport.
There were 8 in the group, as many as I've seen in one spot in this
location. I think there were more further in from the road.
