East Lakes Golf Course is a public golf course and "too my knowledge"
there is no real restriction of access to anyone in the public be golfer
or birdo but please see below my comment on SAFETY before you go onto
the golf course.
To see the Little (Black-backed) Bittern I suggest you park where Martin
Ave and Donaldson Streets meet in Pagewood (refer reference H8 on page
276 if you have a UBD. Sorry I don't use a GPS). There is a gap into the
golf course here where you walk westwards straight towards the pond with
the Little Bittern. The Little Bittern was last present in the
south-western corner of this pond next to the cause way. Just in case it
is not there, scan all the reeds along this pond or the pond just north
of that (the south-east corner of the later pond may also be worth
checking in case there is another Little Bittern as I have seen both
male and female there a few years ago). Please DO NOT FLUSH the bird.
They generally come out regularly at any time of the day and can often
be quite showy. Also look out for Crakes and Rails!
The following may be common sense but I do not want to see anyone
injured. For SAFETY please remember this is a Golf Course so the threat
of potentially being hit by a golf bowl is definitely there. I must
admit I had one golf ball narrowly miss me a few years ago while next to
one of the lakes and away from the greens. The golfers normally move in
a northerly direction and before entering the golf course you will need
to look both left and right regularly and it is best to wait till the
golfers T-off and have moved off ahead of you. Once you are closer to
the ponds you should be fairly Ok unless there is a shonky golf player
out there.
There is another good pond south of the Little Bittern Pond where
Freckled Ducks have turned up on two seperate years and the two ponds
north of the Little Bittern Ponds has a good mixture of various
waterbirds.
Best of luck for those who go out looking for the Little Bittern and
hope you find some other nice birds there. I may be there tomorrow
(Saturday) morning.
