I am not really surprised that there are Woodswallows turning up on the
coast this year. At least around Griffith (including Hay and Hillston) there
were huge numbers last year, with heaps breeding (along with White-winged
Trillers, Crimson Chats, Budgerigars, Rufous Songlarks etc.) after a good
wet winter/spring. This year around the area is considerably drier, so all
those first year birds have to find food somewhere - hence the Hunter,
Western Sydney and Illawarra have been seeing a few this year.
I saw plenty of both Masked and White-browed at Hay last Thursday (in the
38+ heta) and while driving in areas NW and NE of Mildura on the NSW side of
the border, the odd small flock was also present earlier in the week.
A few White-fronted Honeyeaters were still calling, but otherwise the warm
conditions didn't allow much other bird watching.
Cheers,
Peter
