Recently we attended a birding-trip to Uganda which was organised by Phil
Hansbro through Birding-Aus. I've just come across a disturbing message on a
yahoo website, and it now appears that the government is planning to
de-gazette some of its National Parks. Would appreciate if concerned birders
could sign the pettion below.

Tom

This was the message that appeared on the African Birding Website (
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AfricanBirding)

When I was last in Uganda a few weeks ago the proposed degazettement of
Mabira forest was causing a great deal of concern amongst conservation and
environmental bodies. Mabira forest is one
of the premier sites in Uganda and this proposal will seriously threaten the
site.

Please support the petition if you can

Phil

If you are not already aware of the situation here in Uganda, the Government
is determined to degazette several national forests for agriculture namely
sugar cane and palm oil.

This includes Mabira Forest, which is a tropical hardwood forest, with one
of the highest biodiversities of birds, butterflies, trees, and medicinal
plants. It is proposed that one quarter of the forest (over 7,000 hectares)
be given to a private investor for sugar cane production (which already
currently puts very significant pressure on the forest as it completely
surrounds it).

We are requesting that you investigate this further and assist us in
stopping this atrocity on an international level, as local opposition is
seemingly having little impact.

We have also started a petition http://savemabira.petitiontime.com/

Please sign so that we have international bodies also represented on the
petition.

Your assistance, investigation into this issue and international lobby
strength would be greatly appreciated.
