I wandered around Mason Park (near Bicentennial Park) this afternoon with my wife and baby daughter. The path through the casuarinas on the way in from the car park was very active, with brown and new holland honeyeaters and little wattle bird very busy (as well as a bunny rabbit mucking about)! There were half a dozen cattle egret looking majestic in full breeding plumage on the wetland, and amongst the 50+ very active sharpies we spotted a pair of pacific golden plover, with crippling views of the birds that were only about 4 metres from the path. If anyone is going to be near Homebush soon it's well worth a look, as the wetland is very contained and close access is very simple.
