Hi Blake,
The guide I grew up with is called
What Bird is That
A guide to the birds of Australia
by Neville W. Cayley, F.R.Z.S.
with illustrations by the author,
1st edition December 1931,
reprinted 1931, 1932, 1933,
which must be the edition I have,

315 p., Inexed, interleafed colour plates of the bird illustrations which
were to scale but very small, drawn from museum skins.
Entries included common and sci name, explanation of name e.g. (on the page
I happen to have opened, sorry I'm not reproducing all formating and
characters) Nankeen Night-heron Nycticorax caledonicus Gmelin, Nyc-ti-ax-Gk,
nyx, nyctos, night; Gk, corax, crow, raven; caledonicus - of (New) Caledonia

Wendy Moore
Coburg, Melbourne, Victoria, Aust.
