Dear Birding-aussers,
Re GreyTeal Anas gracilis. According to Handbook of Australian, New
Zealand..etc, Vol.1,part B,p.1281,
Parker et al,1985, An annotated Checklist of the Birds of South Australia,2A
was the first to suggest separating A.gracilis from A.gibberifrons Sunda
Teal.
If anyone has access to this paper, did the authors cite the form Anas
gracilis gracilis?
The reason I ask this is that A.g.gracilis is apparently conspecific with
A.g.remissa, an extinct form from Rennell Island in the Solomon Islands,
described by Ripley,1942.
HANZAB simply says ?monotypic? although in the section on Geographical
Variation,p.1280 the account says that ?gracilis includes remissa of Rennel
I.,Solomon Islands?. So the Australian, New Zealand and New Guinea is NOT
monotypic, and should be cited as A.gracilis gracilis. Does anyone know if
anyone has so cited it? Coates in the Birds of Papua and New Guinea
vol.1.pp.100-101 still cites it as gibberifrons gracilis.
Thanks,
John Penhallurick
