The numerous Japanese book shops (Hon Ya Des'ka?) have lots of bird books.
They'll be in Japanese of course but will have the range maps and English or
Scientific names. The English edition of Virds of Japan is out of print as
far as I know, but they might have some thing in English. The Japanese for
bird is "tori" so inside the book shop try, "Sumimasssen, tori no hon
arimaska?". "Domo" is the normal word for Thank You. Ignore the English
language shelves if they take you to them, say, "Hon nihongo, kudasai" -
terrible Japanses but it should get you the Japansese books.

Don't be put off by a Japanese only book, I birded Taiwan with a Chinese
(of which I know nothing) only bird book with great success.

Val
I saw it last Sat in the book shop at South Melbourne Market-the
Merchant of Fairness' $12. Not a lot of good if you're not in Melbourne
of course, but maybe...

Help!
I'm going to Japan on a two week "Nature Tour" of Hokkaido and othe
areas of Japan, which includes quite a bit of birdwatching, but cannot
fine a birding Field Guide for Japan.

The 12 year old Field Guide to Birds of Japan seems to be unavailable.
Does anyone on Birding-Aus know of a copy of this for sale or is there
some other Field Guide that covers Japan? Of course the text needs to be
in English.

I hope someone can help me out. Thanks in advance.

Val Curtis
