Hello Birders,

This week I was given a birding offer I couldn?t refuse! It was Regent
Honeyeater Survey time again and David Geering National Co-ordinator, Regent
Honeyeater Recovery Program. Invited Timothy and me to join him on some of
the survey sites in the valley. (Timothy couldn?t make it, so David was left
with me) This was a great opportunity to see how the ?pros work?. We have
been doing surveys on our property as a part of the program for 5 years now;
the property was already a survey site.

I started my 45 min. survey at 7am and felt quite pleased with myself,
finding 9 Regents. I met up with David at Glen Alice Church he had done 2
sites; from there we surveyed 3 more sites and visited 2 others, no Regents
were found at these sites, but there were some real highlights. White-naped
Honeyeaters were the most abundant species of the day swirling around and
making it very difficult to count, most inconsiderate of them! Spotted
Pardalote with nesting material diving into a hole under a rock, a flock of
Diamond Firetails, Wonga Pigeons, a pair of Regents copulating, Brown
Treecreeper nesting, and the standout a Grey Currawong (a rare visitor to
the Valley), This bird was foraging in the ground litter, finding a large
piece of bark, it lifted the bark with a bit of a struggle until it was
upright and stable and then extracted a large spider from its? web. (Things
birds do when you don?t have a camera)
Unfortunately I couldn?t stay for the second day of surveys; Carol Probets
was coming to do day 2. (Looking forward to a report.)
This was a great experience, being with someone who knows the birds and area
so well and obviously enjoys bird watching.

Cheers
Lynda Hyde
